Chicken Blood Stone’s History and Basic Knowledge

In Chinese antique culture, the art of sealing has always been considered to be one of major hobbies for people. Within the art of sealing, “Chicken Blood Stone”, which was found in Changhua county Lian district of Chekiang in China, was nominated to be one of the most special stones among all seal carving stones. Chicken Blood Stone focused on its color and its natural looking style. Other sealing stamps focused on its artificial work instead of bring out its natural beauty. Because of that, Chicken Blood Stone has been considered to be the most natural looking style stones within the art of sealing.

Chicken Blood Stone was found in Ming Dynasty (1368 AD). Ever since than, Chicken Blood Stone have been popular among people. When Ching Dynasty took place, especially from 1736AD to1795AD, empires frequently used Chicken Blood Stone. Ching Dynasty not only used Chicken Blood Stone as a decoration stone, butalso as seal carving material. From than on, Chicken Blood Stone has been appeared to be one of the most treasurable stones within both decoration and seal carving.

According to a book called “Crimson Jade and Rosy Cloud”, it stated: “The value of Chicken Blood Stone is decided by the scattering of blood color of brilliance of the blood splash and the purity of the material. The red part in Chicken Blood Stone is natural cinnabar. It not only protects us from evil but also brings us good luck and blessings.” (Kuang-Nan Huang, Pg.6- Preface) Starting from Ching Dynasty, Chicken Blood Stone had known for a sealing material that can be a decoration stone, a seal carving stone, and a lucky charm that can prevent from evil. Because of that, now people of all are collecting Chicken Blood Stone.

  2. Blood color has to be bright.
  3. The volume has to be proportioned; both in width and length.

• Bad quality of Chicken Blood Stone have:

  1. The stone combines with hard cement.
  2. The stone contains tiny rocks.
  3. The stone appears crack strips on both interior and exterior.
The way to maintenance:
